OK. I know this is a topic that is widely covered amongst artists since we each need and love our work space. In an ideal world, we could sit down and design our room to perfection and hit Ctrl+S and voila, our beautiful space would magically appear. Alas, we live in the real world, where Ctrl+Z is something we can only desperately wish would work outside the computer.
Still, a girl can dream and with my upcoming move I’ve been doing a lot of dreaming and planning for my new office nook. Our little family has ou
tgrown this particular apartment and while we’re only really moving to a larger version of the same right across the street, there are a couple of perks, one of them being, an office nook for me! Yay! Ok, so it’s not an office nook, it’s actually the Eat in Kitchen. 🙂 But since we have a separate dining area there, a luxury we do not currently have, the EIK is a bonus and so I have commandeered it.
I happen to have a very good starting point for my office, and that’s this gigantic and beautiful craft table that my husband and I saved up for before the baby was born.
Sadly, it’s been in the baby’s room this whole time. I intended to use it while I took care of him, but that was before I actually had a baby and realized that you can’t work in the nursery. You just can’t! Older, more exhausted and a little bit wiser, I decided the EIK was the perfect spot for this awesome table and so I am adding a couple more pieces to the mix.
Here are the plans…
Being as anal as I am, I had my husband search for a floor plan of this place so I could get measurements for the room. I need to know how much room I have left after we put the table in there. That will dictate how much storage space I will be able to have. The twist? My press and finding a suitable surface for it. The search has not been fun at all and still hasn’t yielded results. It’s not that I can’t find anything I like but it’s all so expensive! I’ve left that little problem till the end, hopefully something genius will strike and the problem will be solved.
Here are the other pieces I’d like to put in there. So far it looks like two of these will fit and since the shelves are stacked on top of the cabinet, I can get two cabinets and put the shelves on top, perfect.
Selfishly, I would like more storage space. I know how the house looks after I work now and I know there can NEVER be enough storage space.
Still, this is a great solution, not to mention beautiful. I definitely want to get some cool baskets and/or boxes to store stuff. I tend to leave a lot of things out as I work so I’d like to make clean up easy so as to maintain the work space somewhat tidy. At the end of the day, I still want a clean house. 🙂
So, below you’ll find the closest photo I found to how I’d like the room to look. Granted, I’m renting an apartment so I can’t hang the cool light fixtures or paint the walls (I guess technically I could paint) but I think the overall look is what I’m going for. I even have the pretty window in the center of the room too.
Once the move is complete, I’ll make sure and take photos of my new nook. Can’t promise it’ll look this great but as long as I have the space to work even when Jack is sleeping, well, that’s good enough for me! 🙂
