I’ve been doing it ALL WRONG!
I’ve spent an amazing weekend listening to April Bowles’ Creative Live workshop “Building a Successful Creative Blog” and it’s got me so pumped about my blog again. What’s amazing is that it’s not only got me excited about my blog but about my own story and business as well.
My thing has always been, “I shouldn’t put the fun side of me out there, I’m trying to run a business and I have to be professional.”
Well, I’ve found out that everyone seems to feel this way and I can’t help but think how silly it is because we’re all looking to connect on a deeper level. Don’t know why I didn’t realize it before because people who share and have fun with their quirky personalities are the ones I gravitate towards. Fun, friendly, inviting people who make you want to read what they’re talking about and hang out with them.
Well, things are about to change because I’ve decided, I’m going to use MY VOICE from now on and I promise you, I’m fun, I really am! 🙂
In addition to all the personal learning I’ve done this weekend, I’ve also studied my blog and found a lot of things I’ve been doing wrong. So I’d like to share 3 things I’ve done to my poor little blog that you SHOULD NOT DO to yours if you want to attract an audience.
1. DON’T WRITE VAGUE TITLES
Never thought about this much, I just sort of wrote a general, vague, vanilla headline that made sense to me but not to anyone who isn’t in my head. I never thought about it until I heard April say that the headline is the most important part because its job is to get people to CLICK. Well guess what? That finally CLICKED for me! I came back to my blog and started noticing how bland and non-specific my headlines are and, more importantly, that even I wouldn’t want to click on them. Don’t do this to your blog, he doesn’t deserve it!
Write engaging headlines that make people want to click that link and read your content (and then make sure you have good content too! 😉 Think about what sort of headlines grab your attention and then try to replicate that with your own content.
2. DON’T NOT HAVE A SPECIFIC PLAN/IDEA FOR A POST
This happens to me a lot! I want to update my blog, I really do. I don’t like letting him fall by the way side but I’m not always sure what I want to write about. There is a main idea of what my blog is about but I don’t really know what I want to share in a given post most of the time. Learn from me, DON’T DO IT! Just working on something and taking photos of it and then sort of writing about it doesn’t really work.
You’ve got to know WHY you’re writing a post and WHAT you want to say.
When you don’t know, it’s not only harder to write the post but it comes across in your writing. The more specific you get about your subject, the easier it becomes to write about it and the more interesting your post becomes. So no more staring at the screen trying to figure out how to fill a page. Figure out what you want to say and why and then write about it.
3. DON’T BE SPORADIC WITH YOUR POSTING
Guilty as charged! This is probably my biggest problem and I’m still deciding how to remedy it. I know I don’t have to ask, I’m sure you’re extremely busy all.of.the.time. Yeah, me too! I have a 10 month old and a 4 year old, I almost forgot how to spell leisure (is that how you spell it?). But, along with trying to inject some life back into my blog, I’m trying to organize my time so I can dedicate a pocket of it to writing meaningful posts and creating a schedule to shoot those posts out there.
Set expectations for your readers. Let them know, you’ll be here once a week or twice a month or every full moon.
Whatever works for you, but establish a pattern that doesn’t have to be decoded so that they can get excited to see what’s coming soon because they’ll know it really is coming soon.
Now that you’ve read a couple of the things I’ve done horribly wrong I hope you’ll take a look at your blog and see where you can improve.
It’s really helped me to go back and read through my titles and think whether I’d stop to read my post just based on the title. If your answer is NO (like me), then you’ve got some work to do to make those titles more interesting and generating more clicks. If your answer is YES, well then aren’t you just wonderful! Go have a cup of tea, you deserve it. The rest of us have to get back to work!
So what do you think? Are you here because my title caught your attention? PLEASE! Tell me. I want to know I’m doing something right. What other things have you noticed in your blog that you’d like to change? Tell me, I’d like some of your tips too!
